Latin jazz + Jazz fusion

FIC Studio Sessions presents YOCOYA, a Los Angeles–based band performing music from their album City Spirits, they will be joined by San Diego’s own Vivi Nubes.

Get To Know YOCOYA

Angelo Velasquez is a Los Angeles based drummer, composer, educator, and band leader. He holds his Masters degree in Jazz Performance from California Institute of the Arts and his Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance from California State University Northridge. As The leader of “YOCOYA”, Angelo blends musical styles from all over the world with jazz, in both his playing and compositions to create a powerful, unifying, and emotional musical experience.

Angelo has performed at many prestigious Jazz Festivals, Musical events and Venues such as The Newport Jazz Festival, The Monterey Jazz Festival, The Greek Theater, The LACMA Museum, The Getty Museum and The Jazz at Lincoln Center. Angelo has also performed and recorded with a variety of artists across different genres including Pat Vegas of “Redbone”, popular rappers “IDK”, and AbSoul, Eric Andre’s BLARF Orchestra, Comedian Dave Chapelle, Latin pop singer Edgar Alejandro, Soul Singer Andra DayGrammy nominated artists Monnize Wolf, and Luis Villegas , PBS act “Benise”, and Persian Pop Duo “Kamran and Hooman” Angelo also provided drums for live cabaret and musical productions, including the original production of Brandon Holzer's "Love me, Love me not," the 2018 best Small Cabaret winner. Additionally, he scored indie films such as "Park Rangers," "Technology Now," and Toshin Rao's "Levantate".

City Spirits by YOCOYA

“City Spirits” serves as a curated compilation featuring thirteen distinct works inspired by the specific neighborhoods and vibrant micro-cultures of Los Angeles. The city itself is an echo of varied traditions and identities, each representative of its local community. By weaving together the myriad musical expressions found throughout these areas, this project reverberates a powerful sonic love letter, celebrating the of the city’s vast cultural landscape.

What started with a weekly jazz night inside our 2060 Logan Studio space has grown into an ecosystem of community programs and experiences.
