Jazz Night: Latinx Heritage x Coltrane 100

John Coltrane at 100, explored through the rhythms and traditions of Latinx America.

For our next Jazz Night, Studio Sessions celebrates the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane’s birth through a conversation between his music and the many rhythms, traditions, and cultures that shape Latinx identity in America.

Throughout the night, musicians will explore different eras of Coltrane’s work while bringing in sounds and influences from across the Latinx diaspora. The evening is both a celebration of one of jazz’s greatest innovators and an acknowledgment of the cultural exchange, migration, labor, rhythm, and shared histories that have continually shaped American music.

Coltrane’s music was never simply about technical mastery. It was about searching, devotion, freedom, and using the craft in service of something deeper.

As musician Steve Lyman writes:

“Listening to Coltrane is like looking at the sun. I can't just casually listen to it. If I'm not in a state where I can't really listen with the respect it deserves I just don't listen to it. The craft in that music was extraordinary: technical, rhythmic, conceptual, but craft was never the point. The point was what that craft was in service of: something far deeper than technique. It's a question that never really has an answer. It's a prayer.”

This Jazz Night honors that spirit of searching while celebrating the many cultures that proudly paint the picture of what it means to be Latinx in America.

Para nuestra próxima Noche de Jazz, Studio Sessions celebra el centenario del nacimiento de John Coltrane a través de un diálogo entre su música y los ritmos, tradiciones y culturas que forman parte de la identidad Latinx en Estados Unidos.

A lo largo de la noche, los músicos explorarán diferentes épocas de la obra de Coltrane, incorporando sonidos e influencias de distintas culturas de la diáspora Latinx. La noche celebra a uno de los grandes innovadores del jazz y reconoce el intercambio cultural, la migración, el trabajo, el ritmo y las historias compartidas que continúan dando forma a la música estadounidense.

La música de Coltrane nunca fue solamente una demostración de técnica. Fue una búsqueda de libertad, espiritualidad y algo mucho más profundo.

Una celebración de las muchas culturas que, con orgullo, pintan la imagen de lo que significa ser Latinx en Estados Unidos.
