Community Art Installation at Quartyard Invites San Diegans to Define “What Is Art To You?” Amid Proposed 85% Cut to Public Arts Funding
San Diego, CA — As the San Diego arts and culture community face a proposed 85% reduction in public arts funding, a new interactive installation at Quartyard is giving the community a platform to respond by defining what art means to them.
Titled “What Is Art To You?”, the installation invites the community to write their thoughts, stories, and perspectives using provided chalk.
The piece will continuously evolve as more voices are added, creating a raw and visible reflection of the city’s cultural identity.
The project arrives at a critical moment, as proposed funding cuts threaten the infrastructure that supports local artists, public programming, and creative spaces throughout San Diego.
“A thriving arts community is essential to a world class city. It’s how our city connects and defines themselves,” said Quartyard Managing Partner, Justin Navalle.
Participants are encouraged to:
- Write what art means to them directly on the installation at Quartyard
- Take photos or videos of their contribution
- Share and Tag friends and neighbors to continue the conversation
- Support local artists and advocate for sustained arts funding

By placing the piece in a public space, the installation serves as an accessible outlet for conversation — highlighting the essential role of art in shaping vibrant, inclusive communities.
The installation will be open to the public at Quartyard, 1301 Market St. and cleared regularly to allow for maximum participation.Location is facing outward toward Market Street.
